Because of all the Barbie fervor at the moment (even Google is getting in the act turning the page pink when you do a search for Barbie), thanks to the recently-released Barbie movie, I decided to do a Barbie-related post.
And when thinking of ideas for such a post, I wondered, “Does Barbie have any pets?” It’s been awhile since I’ve played with a Barbie doll and I imagine a lot has changed since I used to play with Barbie, her pals and the Barbie Dream House in the 1970s.
By the way, if you’re interested, you can go to this link to find out what Barbie looked like the year you were born: https://www.insider.com/how-barbie-dolls-changed-evolution-2018-3
But, anyway, I didn’t remember Barbie having any pets back when I was a kid. So, I decided to look into what kinds of fur babies she has had over the years.
Apparently, the answer is a lot. Barbie has had a wide variety of pets, including dogs, cats and horses. On the Mattel site, she is also pictured for sale with a lot of other animals, including a koala and a unicorn. There’s even a Barbie channel on youtube, with some of the episodes, such as the one below, dedicated to a look at Barbie’s pets.
At this link, you can take a fun look at Barbie’s pets from over the years. It’s at this site that I learned that, despite my not remembering any, Barbie has, indeed, had pets basically since when she was first created in the 1959. An early pet was a dog made out of, not plastic, but felt. It’s also a fun site to check out for other Barbie history, which is pretty chock-full of changes, variations and additions.

I know all about Barbie’s pets from my great nieces. I had a dream house in the 1970’s too. 🙂
I used to love that she had an elevator. I think I have a picture of me opening the Dreamhouse on Christmas somewhere.
I wonder why the pets aren’t pink?!?!
She has so many that there probably are some that are. 🙂
