When you ask yourself what makes your cat happy, your own scent might not be on your list of answers, but piles of dirty laundry or your favorite chair might be appealing to cats in part because of scent.

How to choose the perfect chicken coop

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Whether you’re new to raising chickens, or looking to buy a new coop for a flock you already have, the choice you make can mean a healthier flock and a happier person/people caring for them.

To help with the decision, Roost & Root, maker of Round-Top Chicken Coop™ designs, has put together this list of five things to consider when buying a chicken coop.

Motivation: Let your motivation dictate the coop that you select. For example, if you are looking to conveniently and quickly feed your birds, consider a coop with an outside feeding option that saves you from having to enter your coop.

Many prefer walk-in style coops ( to allow for easy accessibility or outdoor style feeders & waterers for convenient & quick feeding.

Alternatively, your goals may be more focused more on egg production. If gathering eggs is your main initiative, then figure out how many eggs you would like to collect in a week, the number of chickens needed, and search for a coop that will meet your flock’s capacity and needs.

Security: Consider your surroundings. Whether you live in a suburb or rural area, make sure the coop you select is predator-proof. This can be achieved by using a high gauge hardware wire cloth, ensuring you always lock up your hens, and using a heavy, well-built coop. (The company doesn’t mention it, but a heavy, well built coop is also important if you live in an area with strong winds. There have been videos posted on Facebook showing some coops blowing apart in strong winds.)

Important numbers: There are a few key measurements and rules for building a healthy chicken coop. A chicken coop should have approximately 1 square foot of ventilation per 10 square feet of coop. This is particularly important for chickens because they have the propensity to develop respiratory challenges over time.

Additionally, you’ll want to make sure your chickens have enough space for their daily activities, including roosting and nesting.

When building a chicken coop, you will need 1 nesting box per 4-5 chickens.

Also, keep in mind that your coop will need 10-12 inches per chicken for the roosting bars.

Cleaning: A walk-in chicken coop, like that of our Round-Top coop line, will provide convenience as they are easier to clean and ergonomically friendly.

Appearance: Like anything else, buying a chicken coop is an investment. (…) An attractive chicken coop can be a nice addition to your property, especially as you watch your chickens enjoy it.

Cute cat shirt: Review of Romwe Women’s Short Sleeve Cat Tee

Reading Time: < 1 minuteI placed an order a couple of days ago for this Romwe Women’s Short Sleeve Tie Front Knot Casual Loose Fit T-Shirt in Black with a cat print and it came today.

In addition to the quick delivery, I’m happy with the shirt itself, which I got compliments on already after wearing it to do some quick errands this evening.

The shirt itself is well-made, with the black being a nice, rich black and the white cat design on it contrasting nicely.

The shirt also has bell sleeves and, as described in its product name, it has a front knot, both of which make it a little more fun to wear than a regular t-shirt. I think it could be paired with a lot of different options inasmuch as pants and possibly skirts.

I ordered the shirt from Amazon at the following link:

All in all, I think it’s a great shirt for cat lovers — as a treat for one’s self or as a gift for someone else. And, the shirt also comes in a wide variety of other colors without the cat design, so, if you like the design, you can order it in different versions, which is what I plan to do. Below are some examples:

Review of Cardboard Scratch Kitty Hotel

Reading Time: 2 minutesI recently ordered this American Cat Club Cardboard Scratch Kitty Hotel for my cats. I thought it was cute. Plus, I was hoping it would encourage my cat, Motor, to spend more time in the bedroom. A comfy kitty hotel seemed like it would do the trick.

Cat Club cat hotel in box
The hotel needed to be assembled when it arrived. As you can see, it came in three pieces, including a cat scratcher for the floor, which is a nice touch, especially since Motor loves them, and the hotel pieces
The instructions were, to me anyway, not super clear, so I just went ahead and assembled the hotel from scratch (first pun of the article — will there be another one?)

It took about two to three minutes, since it was just a matter of folding and then inserting the tabs into the slots.Assembled Cat Club hotel
Both Motor and Poussey were really curious to inspect the assembled product. I took about eight pictures of Motor checking it out, but they all came out blurry, so here’s Poussey:
Poussey can cat hotel
I assembled the hotel this morning and, as of this evening, neither cat has gone inside it yet. Some cats are natural explorers. My cats tend to err on the side of caution and I’m pretty sure they will end up checking in (and there it is!) to the hotel soon.

I’m really hoping they enjoy it and it’s tempting to order more because there are so many different cute styles, including the ones below.

Check out our latest installment of Meadow chews stuff up!

Reading Time: 2 minutesAs you may know, from time to time, we feature my sister’s dog, Meadow and put a new toy to the the Meadow chew test to see how long a toy usually described as durable or indestructible, or something along those lines, can survive Meadow’s strong teeth and enthusiastic playing.

This time around, Meadow is trying out the Chuck it! Kick Fetch ball.

Meadow with new ball

The ball is made of foam and rubber and brighly colored, so it’s easy to spot when being thrown in the park or in the water. It also got pretty high customer ratings on for durability (a 3.8 out of 4 average). For more information, you can check it out on Amazon at this link:

But, as you can see from the above pic, Meadow was pretty determined to put this ball to the Meadow Test…

The next pic shows the top of the ball after one day with Meadow. The top has suffered some damage, but it looks like there are still a few days of yummy chewiness ahead for her.

And, it also looks like she needed to take a little break and snuggle up with my nephew before more chewing. Everybody say, “Awwww!” 🙂
